Career Coaching

Have you been feeling dissatisfied with your career?

Are you struggling with a lack of purpose and fulfillment at work?

Are you considering or confronted with a change in your job or career?

Does it feel like time is running out and you have not achieved your goals?

Maybe your career is not progressing as you expected. When you started out, your vision for your career did not contemplate tedium, ambiguity, micromanagers, difficult coworkers, unreasonable clients, or workplace toxicity. Maybe it is becoming harder to see a path forward, whether you were passed over for promotions a few times, or the culture does not seem to be the right fit, or you have been hitting a ceiling with your work one way or another. As a result, you have been spinning your wheels, uncertain about your future and you are here because you are considering seeing a career coach.

You are feeling stuck and need help navigating ambiguity.

There are many reasons why people may feel trapped in an unfulfilling role or overwhelmed at the prospect of change. Perhaps fear of the unknown is more compelling than the role you know, despite chronic feelings of dissatisfaction. Time, finances, and other constraints may limit your options. Maybe you have been pigeonholed into your role and a change seems impossible due to a lack of training, experience, or qualifications. What if there are people on your team who depend on you for their own development, sense of belonging, and security? What if the next role or the next organization is even worse?

Alternatively, maybe a looming change has you looking for support. A restructuring is changing your role into something entirely different. Layoffs are on the horizon. New leadership is at the helm and the culture has shifted into something unrecognizable. A promotion has you deep outside of your comfort zone. Or perhaps you blinked and retirement is around the corner and the prospect of leaving is causing you distress.

No matter your work or career-related challenges, I am confident that I can help. As a career coach with first-hand experience in a variety of professional settings, I offer solution-focused coaching services for working professionals who want to pursue more fulfilling, satisfying careers and navigate times of change and uncertainty with greater effectiveness. For better or worse, careers have a profound impact on our lives.

If you find yourself in unfulfilling career or feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of change, you are not alone. Many people imagine the arcs of their chosen careers to be very different from how they proceed in reality. The workplace often prioritizes its own functioning and survival over the needs and expectations of individuals that comprise it. Sometimes everything aligns and you thrive along with the business, but sometimes the business pushes you aside, lets you go, or just needs you to limp along as it continues onward.  So when the needs of the business diverge from the needs of its people, it is no surprise that many of them, despite being high-functioning professionals, get burned out and confused and look to coaching as a solution.

Fear is one of the main reasons people struggle with change and stay in unsatisfying lines of work.

Many leaders and individual contributors that work with me express a fear of change and ambiguity. In some cases, it is a fear of walking away from all the social capital, connections, and accomplishments at the current organization to start over in an entirely new environment. For others, the risk of uprooting their lives, routines, families, and income for what feels like a gamble in a new role, career, or location is prohibitive.  Sometimes a fear of letting down coworkers, teams, mentors and mentees, or feeling as though a greater loyalty is owed to the organization is too compelling.  So their instinct is to stay put.

This is a complicated place to be, and it is one of the main reasons I offer career coaching. I strive to help people work through these complicated feelings so that they can get unstuck and figure out the best path forward for their lives and careers.

Coaching can help you pursue a meaningful and rewarding career.

Man wearing suit adjusts his tie.

At the end of the day and at the end of your career, you want to be able to look back on a lifetime of meaningful accomplishments. For now, you want to live without Sunday blues, know that you are leveraging your strengths to their fullest potential, and feel a sense of pride in how you show up every day.

If this sounds like you, then you are in the right place. My coaching services are ideal for high-functioning professionals who find themselves at a crossroads in their careers. Whether you are looking to hone your workplace communication skills, achieve a healthy work-life balance, transition into a career change, or have a successful retirement, I am confident that coaching can help.

What to expect in career coaching sessions.

In the beginning of our work together, you and I will explore questions such as: How did you wind up here? Why did you choose this career and this job? What are your needs, and which of those needs are not being met? When do you feel good about your work, and when do you feel the worst? What do you ultimately want out of your life and career?

With the foregoing information, you and I can take a closer look at your abilities, interests, and values, assess what stands out, and identify the areas that need growth or change.

I take a solution-focused approach to career coaching, using mindfulness strategies and a wide range of cognitive-behavioral skills to help clients:

  • Make decisions that incorporate emotion and values in addition to logic and reason;

  • Communicate in a way that is persuasive, authentic, and empathetic;

  • Analyze risks and rewards in times of uncertainty;

  • Leverage the motivating power of anxiety and the energizing nature of frustration; and

  • Identify values that make their lives and work more meaningful and satisfying.

All of these skills can help you move toward a career that is authentic, fulfilling, and in tune with your sense of purpose. You do not have to stay stuck where you are—coaching can enable you to move forward in your career and find a path that aligns with your unique needs and values.

You may have some questions about career coaching…

How is coaching different from therapy?

Therapy teaches you how to identify, manage, and live with diagnosable mental health disorders. Coaching is more focused on professional goals and the practical steps you can take to achieve them. If you have anxious, depressive, or other mental health symptoms that are not so overwhelming that they impede your functioning, you can still certainly benefit from coaching. But if your mental health challenges are more severe, clinical therapy would be more appropriate.

How can you help me if you have not worked in my industry or profession?

Even though we may not share the same professional background, there will always be consistent themes and elements across different professions. For example, every job you have ever had involved people. Career coaching focuses heavily on you as a person as well as the way you interact with other people—how you communicate through your words and actions, how you influence through your leadership, and how you navigate workplace dynamics.

What if there is nothing I can change?

We can pressure-test this belief together in coaching, in which case we might find that it is actually not as true as it seems. If it is true, however, we can focus on finding meaning in what you are already doing and exploring what we can do to make it less painful. If not, we can explore new possibilities for your career and assess the steps needed to attain them.

Your career is one of the most important parts of your life. You deserve to find happiness and satisfaction in it.

If there is a professional goal you want to achieve but you are not sure where to start, or you have been feeling stuck in your career without knowing why, I encourage you to pursue coaching with me. To get started, all you have to do is fill out a contact form.
