Therapy for Working Professionals.
Behavioral health and wellness support for working professionals in Wisconsin.
How much is your work affecting your life?
Your career shows up in your life in all kinds of ways. Work provides you with resources, a role in the world, community, and values, but it can also contribute to a number of problems that have far-reaching effects.
For example, do any of these resonate with you?
Burnout
Unmanaged Stress
Imposter Syndrome
Performance Anxiety
Perfectionism
Procrastination
Depression
Generalized Anxiety
Anger Issues
Some of these issues come and go, but many of them tend to stick around. They can have a profound impact on your ability to perform at work, the quality of your relationships and home life, and your outlook on life overall.
Sidebar Counseling is a psychotherapy practice in Wisconsin focusing on these and other work-related behavioral health issues. The practice is owned an operated by a recovering attorney who leverages evidence-based interventions coupled with real-world experience to provide support to working professionals in high-stress fields.

Sidebar’s Approach to Therapy
Sidebar provides one-on-one psychotherapy with a focus on helping working professionals overcome work and career-related behavioral health issues. Whether you are looking for therapy for burnout, managing stress, or help with anxiety, Sidebar can help.
Sidebar’s approach is heavily cognitive, meaning that we will focus on the content, manner, and frequency of your thoughts and the impact they have on your functioning. The work is highly insight-based and serves to raise awareness of problematic patterns of thinking that give rise to undesirable real-world effects. Along the way, we will identify and confront these patterns and collaboratively work through ways of modifying them to help you achieve your treatment goals.
We will also take a look at your past through a psychodynamic lens to better understand where these things came from and how they impact your functioning today. A lot of our views, values, and understandings of ourselves, others, and the world stems from early experiences, so we will take the time to explore your history in view of how you function today.
Finally, armed with your history and a robust understanding of how you operate now, we take a solution-focused approach to identify and progress towards your goals. We will test various strategies and approaches, learn what works best for you, and prepare you to take on future challenges.
All of our work is virtual. We don’t rely on worksheets or written homework, but instead focus on gaining new insights and observing how they play out over the course of the week between sessions.

About Sidebar
I'm Matt Shin, psychotherapist and owner of Sidebar Counseling. I am an attorney-turned-psychotherapist, still recovering from practicing law for twelve years. I practiced in large law firm and corporate environments as well as a solo practitioner, supporting clients ranging from global organizations to individuals before turning to a career in mental health.
I personally experienced a range of mental health challenges while practicing law and witnessed many others having similar difficulties as well. The world is always on, and work culture has given rise to the expectation that we too need to always be on, and that our careers should be prioritized above all else.
This is decidedly untrue.
For many of us, we got to where we are as a result of some perhaps not too sustainable habits and beliefs. I am anxious and perfectionistic by nature, I am trained to worry, and I still think of time as potentially billable hours. I used to leverage these attributes in furtherance of my work and my career, but I came to realize that going all in on these beliefs comes with a cost that I cannot sustain.
My practice as a mental health professional focuses on easing the hold that unsustainable habits and beliefs can have on working professionals. We deserve to live full, balanced lives that are enriching and fulfilling. We owe it to ourselves, our families, our friends, and our clients to show up in the best way we can. It is my great ambition to leverage Sidebar to help you do just that.
